Stafford High School Theater Department Presents ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ in December
(Fredericksburg, Va., October 11, 2017) – The “Stafford Players,” Stafford High School’s theater students, will bring the magical world of Narnia to the stage in “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” on December 1-2 and 7-9. The play is open to the public and geared to children and adults.
During the World War II air raid of London, the Pevensie children are evacuated to the estate of an enigmatic professor in the English countryside. While exploring the house, the youngest sister, Lucy, finds a mysterious wardrobe in an otherwise deserted room. On the other side, she finds a mystical land. She informs her sister and brothers of her visit to the land called Narnia, and when they try to escape the professor’s strict housekeeper, they hide in the wardrobe together. To their surprise, they find themselves in a country perpetually covered in snow and ruled by the cold-hearted White Witch. The children are befriended by the residents of Narnia – animals and mythical creatures – including the powerful and brave lion, Aslan. They join Aslan to defeat the White Witch and bring Narnia back to the beautiful land it had been before.
“We wanted to present a family-oriented show for the holidays this year, and ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ includes the winter and holiday motifs, fitting nicely into the season,” said Stafford High School Theater Director Michael D’Addario. “The story is one that has always resonated with the group, and it was ideal for the students in our program. We look at the students we have and select plays in which they can shine. We also wanted to perform a play that had the opportunity for great theatricality.”
D’Addario, who has taught theater at the school for the past eight years, and Chad Johnson, the school’s fine arts teacher, work with the students to bring quality entertainment to the students and public. Over the past decade, the Stafford High School Theater Department has won more than 100 awards in district, regional, state and national competitions. The program also features a thriving improv comedy troupe, which has grown to 40 students over the last few years.
The cast of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” travels to Grafton Elementary School to conduct Theater Club for third through fifth graders each week. Although the cast has a rigorous rehearsal schedule for the play, they want to bring their love of theater to the elementary school students.
“The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” performances will take place Friday and Saturday, December 1 and 2 at 7p.m.; Thursday, Friday and Saturday, December 7, 8 and 9 at 7p.m.; and Saturday, December 2 and 9 at 2 p.m. An added treat of live music, face painting, juggling, balloon animals and Father Christmas (for photos) will be available before the show and at intermission. Tickets are $5 for children, students and senior citizens and $7 for adults. They will be available at the door.
The final performance on Saturday, December 9, will also include the option of dinner with the show beginning at 5 p.m. Tickets for the dinner theater is $15 for children, students and senior citizens and $17 for adults.
