Four local organizations have joined together to present a Communications and Skill Building Workshop to the residents of Fredericksburg and the surrounding counties. The non-partisan workshop, “A Pathway to Civility in Communications,” is designed to challenge people’s thinking that “my way or the highway” has to be the new form of civil discourse. It is a joint effort of two sponsors, the Fredericksburg chapter of the League of Women Voters and the social justice committee of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Fredericksburg (UUFF); and two partners, the Central Rappahannock Regional Library (CRRL) and the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board (RASCB).
Professional facilitators with experience in mediation, counseling, teaching, anger management, gender based discourse, multicultural communications and family conflict will teach the workshop. Participants will learn to limit emotion, reduce fear, and evaluate presumptions in conversations. They will also have the opportunity to explore ways to bring respect, courtesy, empathy and commonality to discussions. Difficult conversations will be practiced as part of the program. Community members aged 16 and older are invited to participate.
The event is non-partisan and open to all interested parties at no cost. It will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2017 from 1-5pm at the UUFF building at 25 Chalice Circle in Fredericksburg, VA 22405. The building is located behind the Chatham Square office complex, near the entrance to the Chatham Square Shopping Center. Parking is available at the site and the building is fully accessible. Child care for infants through age 10 is available, and volunteers are also available to pick up persons requiring transportation. Both child care and transportation need to be requested at the time of registration.
